The Daylight Flexilens

This week I am reviewing a magnifier for those visually challenged fly tiers out there or those that tie little 22 midges that need a little help seeing. The Daylight Company makes lights and magnifiers for those that like to do crafts. They target markets such as needle pointers and painters. The company did make a magnifier that mounts on your vise but they seem to have discontinued that model, and specifically supporting and targeting fly tiers. The magnifier is not bad but will add another foot print to your desk, so if you have limited space you may want to move along and find one that will actually mount to your vise.

First impression

The magnifier is made in china and has a white base with a rimless 5" inch +3 diopter that equals 1.75x magnification on a black flexible arm. The arm is 18" inches long giving you plenty of room and flexibility. I have a pedestal base vise and without a long arm the bases would too close together. I am very confident that you will be hard pressed to find a bigger magnifier at this price point.

Putting it to the test

The magnifier is really nice and allows you to see quite a lot of detail with your work. You can make the fly bigger by moving the magnifier further back from the fly and more life size the closer it is. The arm works quite well and will hold the bend position you move it in. The base is plenty heavy enough and will not tip over.

The verdict

The Flexilens does have a few negatives, such as the fact that it will not mount on a vise or give me the flexibility to do so is not a plus. Daylight company if your reading this, your flexible arm screws into the base, why not make an adaptor to screw into a vise mount? The other negative is that the lens seems to be a magnet for your materials to stick to. Its not all bad the magnifier is nice and big. The Flexilens is really good as long as you have the room on your desk. So take a look the next time your looking to add some benefit to your tying at a reasonable price of 49.00 USD.
